Design Manager

My client is looking for a Design Manager that will lead the delivery of high-quality, technically compliant engineering solutions across water, wastewater, and infrastructure projects. This role oversees multi-disciplinary teams and design consultants, ensuring all designs are robust, safe, cost-effective, and delivered on time and within budget.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the delivery of technical design solutions across water, wastewater, and infrastructure projects

  • Ensure all designs meet statutory, regulatory, and client standards

  • Provide concept, outline, and detailed design for pipelines, sewers, pumping stations, and treatment processes

  • Manage external design consultants and ensure contractual duties are met

  • Coordinate multi-disciplinary engineering teams

  • Oversee development of robust, operable, and maintainable asset designs

  • Review, validate, and approve drawings, calculations, and specifications

  • Support project teams with technical input and design decisions

  • Monitor design progress against programme milestones

  • Manage design budgets and resource allocations

  • Implement design change control procedures

  • Identify design risks and opportunities

  • Support engagement of specialist suppliers and technical partners

  • Collaborate with operational, maintenance, and strategic stakeholders

  • Provide oversight for temporary works requirements and design coordination

Essential

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in design and design management

  • Strong background in foul water drainage and potable water mains

  • Degree/HNC in Civil Engineering or equivalent

  • Membership of a recognised engineering institution (or working toward IEng/CEng)

  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills

  • Experience managing multi-disciplinary engineering teams

  • Proven ability to interrogate and challenge design information

  • Strong time management and organisational skills

  • Ability to deliver high-quality design outputs to deadlines

Desirables

  • Experience working within large infrastructure programmes

  • Knowledge of BIM and common data environments

  • Understanding of temporary works processes and responsibilities

  • Experience supporting supply-chain and technical procurement

  • Ability to develop design trackers and progress reporting dashboards

  • Strong relationship-building skills with clients and partners
