Senior Quantity Surveyor

We are seeking a seasoned Senior Quantity Surveyor to join our civils team. You will play a key role in driving commercial performance, cost control and contract management across substantial infrastructure projects. Working closely with project managers and site teams, you will ensure financial and contractual disciplines are maintained from pre-contract through to final account. The ideal candidate will have proven experience in the civils/infrastructure sector, strong commercial acumen, and the ability to operate autonomously and collaboratively.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the commercial management of projects: prepare and review cost plans, budgets, forecasts, and final accounts.
  • Measure, value and agree contracts, variations and claims in line with contract terms and company policy.
  • Monitor project cost performance, report on KPI’s, highlight risks and opportunities and support mitigation.
  • Work with procurement and supply chain to optimise costs and contract terms, support tendering and subcontract negotiation.
  • Liaise with project teams and senior management to provide commercial guidance, ensure compliance with contractual obligations and company standards.
  • Prepare cash-flow forecasts, cost reconciliations and project cost reports for management review.
  • Support change management process: identify, quantify and negotiate changes, claims and variation orders with clients, subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Drive continuous improvement of commercial processes, tools and reporting mechanisms.
  • Mentor and develop junior commercial team members as required.
  • Ensure adherence to company values, safety, quality and environmental standards.

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Proven experience as a Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor within the civil engineering/infrastructure sector (water, highways, utilities or similar).
  • Strong contract and commercial management capabilities covering measurement, valuation, claims and final accounts.
  • Good knowledge of civil engineering construction methods, subcontracting and supply chain dynamics.
  • Excellent numerical skills, commercial awareness and the ability to interpret and analyse financial data and cost reports.
  • Confident communicator at all levels – able to influence and collaborate with site, project and commercial teams.
  • Self-motivated, proactive and able to make decisions under pressure, with strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in commercial software and MS Office (Excel, Word, Project). Experience in construction/contract management systems is desirable.
  • Degree or HND in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or similar; professional membership (e.g., RICS, CIOB) is beneficial.

Desirable Attributes

  • Experience of infrastructure projects in challenging environments (e.g., live utilities, highways, water/wastewater).
  • Understanding of health, safety, environmental and social value considerations in civils/infrastructure projects.
  • Experience of mentoring others or developing a commercial team.
