Section Engineer

Overview:

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Section Engineer to join a leading civil engineering contractor delivering major highways infrastructure projects across the South East. This Section Engineer role will support the delivery of complex highways works across the National Highways network, covering areas including Surrey, Hampshire and surrounding counties.

The successful Section Engineer will play a key role in the technical delivery of highways projects, managing engineering activities across allocated sections of work including carriageway construction, surfacing, drainage, structures, waterproofing, expansion joints, parapets, vehicle restraint systems (VRS) and associated civils works. This is an excellent opportunity for a Section Engineer with highways experience to join a respected infrastructure contractor delivering high-profile schemes across the region.

Key Responsibilities:

As the Section Engineer, you will be responsible for:

  • Managing engineering activities across allocated sections of highways projects from commencement through to completion.
  • Providing technical support and leadership to Site Engineers, subcontractors and delivery teams.
  • Ensuring works are delivered safely, on programme, within budget and to the required quality standards.
  • Undertaking setting out using total stations, GPS equipment and traditional methods including profiles, batter rails and pegs.
  • Reviewing construction drawings, specifications and contract documents to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Raising technical queries with designers, engineers and client teams to resolve project challenges.
  • Supporting quantity take-offs and maintaining commercial awareness across project activities.
  • Completing inspections, testing and quality records in line with Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs).
  • Ensuring compliance with project specifications, design requirements and quality assurance processes.
  • Coordinating with site management teams, subcontractors and stakeholders to support efficient delivery.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree, HNC or HND qualification in Civil Engineering or equivalent construction experience.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working as a Site Engineer or Section Engineer on infrastructure projects.
  • Proven experience delivering highways projects for a main contractor.
  • Strong knowledge of highways construction including carriageways, surfacing, drainage, structures and associated civils works.
  • Experience working on National Highways schemes or similar major infrastructure projects is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of construction drawings, specifications, ITPs and quality assurance processes.
  • Competent setting out experience using GPS and total station equipment.
  • Good commercial awareness with an understanding of cost versus value.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a wider team.
  • Valid CSCS card, with SSSTS, First Aid, NRSWA and Cat & Genny qualifications desirable.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel across the region.
