Design Manager

Overview:

Design Manager — based in Manchester, delivering design solutions on the United Utilities water framework. Lead multi-disciplinary engineering teams and design consultants to produce robust, operable and compliant asset designs across clean water, wastewater and biosolids projects, ensuring timely delivery to budget and programme.

Key responsibilities:

  • Own technical appropriateness and quality of design solutions across the project lifecycle (concept → detailed design → construction issue).

  • Ensure designs comply with client specifications, statutory standards and company procedures (including H&S and CDM obligations).

  • Lead and coordinate multi-discipline engineering teams, external design consultants and supply-chain specialists to deliver fit-for-purpose designs.

  • Manage consultant contracts, design budgets, resources and engineering schedules; produce accurate forecasts and design trackers.

  • Implement and control engineering change processes, manage scope changes, risks and design-related commercial implications.

  • Interrogate and challenge designs, reports and survey information to mitigate design risk and identify opportunities.

  • Review constructability, temporary works requirements and engage temporary works designers where required.

  • Verify engineering outputs (calculations, drawings, specifications) are checked, approved and fully auditable.

  • Collaborate with Project Managers, Operations, HSEQ and stakeholders to resolve technical issues, support delivery and ensure smooth handover.

  • Foster strong supply-chain and client relationships and mentor/lead engineering staff to drive continuous improvement.

Qualifications:

Essential

  • Extensive design and design management experience (water sector preferred).

  • Degree, HNC or equivalent in Civil/Structural or relevant engineering discipline.

  • Proven experience with foul drainage systems and potable water mains.

  • BIM and common data environment experience.

  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer (or working towards membership).

  • Strong communicator with people, time and project design management skills.

Desirable

  • Chartered Engineer (C.Eng).

  • Familiarity with CESWI, WIMES standards and United Utilities specifications.

  • Temporary Works awareness and audit/governance experience.
